PREVENTATIVE MEASURES – VACUUM, VACUUM, VACUUM!

Vacuuming is the best way to keep your pile looking plush, preventing wear and keeping dirt from getting into the fibres, especially in heavy traffic areas – think stairs, landings and living room.

STAINS! ANNOYING, BUT NOT THE END OF THE WORLD – SOME CARPETS ARE BLEACH CLEANABLE – BUT THERE’S A CATCH.

First things first, get to the stain as soon as it occurs, it will be much easier to remove when fresh.

When removing a stain it is imperative that you do not rub the stain – blot firmly – never rub!

Only clean your carpets with a bleach solution if they are 100% Polypropylene, a durable man-made fibre. Do not use a bleach solution on any other type of carpet. To create the bleach solution always use 8 parts water to 2 parts bleach and blot with a clean white cotton cloth, using another to dry.

If your carpet is made from wool or is a wool mix then the safest approach is to blot with a clean white cotton cloth and a small amount of misted water and then use a paper towel to blot, – blotting essentially “lifts up” the stain. Repeat this process until the stain has been completely removed. As wool is a natural fibre, it is best to steer clear from cleaning agents that don’t profess to be Wool Safe.

SOMETIMES IT’S BEST TO LEAVE IT TO THE PROS

Professional carpet cleaners can often be a lot less expensive than first imagined, so if you have tried to fight a stain that looks like its going to defeat you, call in the pros rather than risk worsening the stain. Your carpet will thank you!
An insiders tip – if you are thinking of claiming on your manufacturers Stain Warranty, which many carpets come with, the small print often states you can only be eligible to claim on the guarantee if you have used the services of a professional carper cleaner to remove the stain and this service was unsuccessful.

Now you’re in the know, don’t live in fear of a ruined pile – carry out reasonable amounts of care – impose that shoes off rule, vacuum regularly, get to stains quickly and effectively, patch test any cleaning agents in an inconspicuous area and always call in the professionals if you’re struggling.
